Why Do We Love Epic Fantasy?

Everybody considers himself or herself to be an average person. Everybody is just a little guy trying to get along in a big world. Is it no wonder that the same is true for the heroes in epic fantasy novels. They are almost always just a little guy; a blacksmith or a kitchen boy or some such. Yet he or she manages to do great things and this "little guy" doing great things is very appealing.

When you read one of these books don't you imagine it to be you? Don't you wonder about the way you would handle the situations and obstacles that the hero faces?

We all desire this achievement of great things. In part it is a rebellion against powers that force us into doing things that we don't want to do - powers that we don't understand. This is probably rooted in the rebellion of childhood and there is probably some Oedipal undertones to the whole thing.

But epic fantasy goes even further than this desire to do and achieve great things. It takes another step and digs a deeper hole into the human psyche. This is where the "fantasy" comes into play.

Epic fantasy not only touches a part of us that wants to rebel against power and achieve great things it also touches on a totally different part of what we are as humans. It touches upon our imagination and our sense of wonder.

Often times this sense of wonder is rooted in the fear of the unknown. We are afraid of the unknown creatures that may lurk under the bed, inside the closet, out in the hall, in the nearby woods, or even on another world. Maybe fear is the initial generator of these fantastic things but the imagination takes over and a sense of wonder and awe envelops the whole process.

So epic fantasy is not just escapist reading that passes the time it is something that truly touches the hearts and minds of us human beings.
