Heroic Fantasy -Turn Yourself into an Epic Fantasy Hero. You know you want to! (But are you really up to the challenge?)

Ask yourself why you like to read epic fantasy. Is there a part of you that admires the main character of the story? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to pursue a similar course? Could you handle the challenges?

It's easy to fantasize about the challenges that a person faces in the medieval world when you are sitting nice and cozy in your easy chair. The main character of the story is thrust into a set of circumstances that he or she has to overcome. Often times the path is unclear and he has to struggle in the dark to find the right things to do.

This lack of clarity is often the most appealing part of epic fantasy. The story seldom opens up with "The name of the bad guy that wants to ruin the world is: _____". Now go and take care of him.

It is never that easy. There is always subterfuge, backstabbing, confusion, obstacles, riddles, puzzles and more. And of course there is usually a time limit; If you don't hurry the world will be lost.

So how do you become an epic fantasy hero?

Let's take a quick look at the definition of Epic Fantasy. You see it doesn't say anything about swords or castles. It is all about two things: A fantastic imaginitive world (fantasy world) and an epic quest with world-wide ramifications.

Now you might say the part about the fantastic imaginitive world doesn't apply to you but you know it does. You can fly over the oceans in a few hours, talk to people anywhere with the touch of a button. You can travel from town to town at twenty times the speed of any horse. The magic in this world abounds and it is available to you. That's better than any sword I'd say.

Ok, so you live in a fantastic world but what about the Epic quest? Where are the dragons and the dark lords that want to destroy or take over the world? You know that this is never clear in the epic fantasy world. Somebody doesn't just tell our hero here is the dragon, here is the sword, go take care of it. There are trials and tribulations on the way. There are things to learn and obstacles to overcome. It isn't easy. It never is?

But in this epic fantasy where you are the hero I am going to make it very easy. I am going to tell you the names of the dragons you will just have to find them and figure out how to slay them.

Here is how your epic begins:

The world is thrust into chaos and uncertainty, there is darkness brewing; darkness in the form of a brood of dragons. Each dragon has a name: terrorism, world hunger, energy crisis, war, hate and more. An average person (You) from an average town in the land of America has taken on the mantle of responsibility to rid the world of these dragons. With each passing day these dragons gain strength and soon they will conquer the world.

You face an uncertain future and the path is not clear but the whole world is at stake and you brave the unknown with unwavering courage and a commitment to what is right. Thus your journey begins...

Whoa! Where did that come from? That isn't exactly the making of an epic fantasy novel you say. I say that it is. In a thousand years they will be telling the epic fantasy of the person that killed these dragons.

Just as the Epic of Gilgamesh has survived for thousands of years the epic of you will also survive.

Are you ready for the challenge? Of course not. The hero in any epic fantasy novel is never ready for the challenge -that's what makes it a challenge (an epic challenge).

So what will it be? Will you take on the challenge or will you go back to watching TV? The dragons await and they are very hungry.
